The English Department is committed to developing students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking at both KS3 and KS4. English is taught by specialists who bring deep subject knowledge and expertise to their teaching. Working with fiction and non-fiction texts, we explore how to write for different purposes, both creatively and through transactional writing. Learners read a range of texts, looking closely at writer’s craft and evaluating form, structure and language. Where Literature is studied, learners engage with poetry, Shakespeare and 19th, 20th and 21st Century fiction, developing their understanding of literary heritage and contemporary voices. Our curriculum fosters a love of literature and language, encouraging creativity, empathy, and cultural awareness. Across the schools we hold competitions to raise the profile of reading and we encourage learners to read a full range of texts they can find in our library. English teaching is differentiated and individualised so learners develop into confident readers and writers who can express themselves effectively across different contexts. If required, we also offer a Functional Skills pathway in English which provides a pathway into GCSEs, ensuring all students can progress to appropriate qualifications that match their needs and aspirations.
